Zoo's Who?

Title: Zoo's Who?
Author: Douglas Florian
Illustrated: Douglas Florian
Published: Harcourt Children's Books
Date: April 1, 2005
Summary: This is a book that talks about different animals by short but creative and silly poems.
Age Level:Elementary (3-4)
Strengths: I think the poems were very short and concise so that the reader can follow along. They are very silly as well. The text and illustrations are separated on each page, but they are all unique in different ways. I like how the pictures show the animals in different ways (and some have letters all around them that spell their names). I also like the use of concrete poetry. There were some poems that used. Perhaps the author wanted to be creative with describing his animals, so he played with words and their designs. There was also good rhyming in it as well.
Concerns: Some of the pictures are a little confusing. I think the student should see what the animal really looks like before they are presented this book, otherwise, they might get confused. I really think the author should have included more creativity with his text. He used concrete poetry, but not in all of the poems. It's unpredicatable.
Comments: This would be a great way to learn more about poetry and the use of concrete poetry, so the students may be inspired to write and design one themselves, as well as learning new animals.
